As your home ages, so does its look. Sometimes the best remedy is to repaint your home. However the garage door isn’t as simple as throwing paint on top of the old weathered paint. There is a proper process in which a garage door needs to be repainted. Quality Garage Door Repair will share the proper way a garage door should be repainted that anyone can do themselves should that be your wish. When it comes to repainting your garage door, you will need to plan on it being a two day project. When you’re preparing to repaint, the first thing you will want to consider is the weather. You will want a two day forecast of warm, nice weather. Don’t try to repaint in the wind or rain.
Remove Old Paint from Garage Door
You will need to scrape the old paint off. Use some stripping paint remover and scrape away the paint. Afterward, sand down the rest of the residue. It is important that you take the time to do this step first. This will reveal any rust that may have started eating your garage door. If any rust is present, make sure to spend the time sanding it away. Once you are finished with this step, take some soapy water and sponge your garage door clean then rinse it off with a garden hose. Make sure to allow plenty of time to let it dry completely. Some will even use a pressure washer instead of a garden hose. After the garage door is completely dry, then apply a special primer that will protect metal from rusting. Allow the primer to dry overnight.
Outdoor Based Latex Paint & Sealer on Garage Door
Use masking tape to tape off the boarders around the garage door. After you have done the masking, get a large sheet of plastic under the garage door and shut the door all the way. This will help prevent paint from getting on the places you don’t want it and prevent paint drips from getting on your driveway. When you are choosing paint for your garage door, the color doesn’t matter as much as the type. You will want to make sure you use an outdoor based latex paint. Make sure you use a roller for the larger areas and a brush for the small tight spots. As you begin to paint you should start at the top and take a small section all the way down and work your way to the other side. This is a good method when you’re planning on putting a second coat of paint. A second coat is strongly recommended for all outdoor painting projects, especially if the under color of the garage door is darker than the new paint. After you have finished painting then put on a sealer to protect the outer paint from the outdoor elements.
